Stuart Mária

Friedrich Schiller: Mary Stuart

The script was prepared by Júlia Sándor and Péter István Nagy, based on László Kálnoky’s translation

Two queens. Elizabeth I (Tudor) on the English throne, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, in her custody. Fellow sufferers, relatives, enemies. There are two of them, but on the English throne and in men’s hearts there is room for only one. The prison is cramped, the charge is false, the sentence is death. Rank obliges, the people demand, interests compel. One must die, the other must kill. Everything has already been decided, yet everything can still be reversed: this is the penultimate moment. In a world invented by men, where the ruthless slaughterhouse logic of political advancement rules above all, two women face each other — and in their image freedom confronts arbitrariness. But can the former have a chance against the latter? Two queens on opposite sides. One breaks under it, the other breaks herself into the system.
